Image of the Month for Dec 2000

IC 434 Orion

This image was obtained on October 15, 2000 with a customer's Centurion 18 and an ST-8e abg CCD camera self guiding itself during check-out. Exposure time was 2 @ 5 minutes with clear filter, 5 minutes each red, green and blue filters (unbinned). The Horsehead Nebula is located in a beautifully colored area of glowing gas. Note how the interstellar dust limits the number of stars on the right (east) portion of the image.

This is a cropped portion of the luminance image that shows fine stellar detail.
